I've just discovered Miéville and after reading Kraken, I decided to go
back and read all his books from the beginning. I've just now finished
King Rat and will go to the library soon to get Perdido Street Station.

I appreciated Mark Kram's Ghosts Of Manila so much that I read it again immediately, watching youtube videos of the Ali/Frazier fights when appropriate. Brutal stuff.

Also I bought Daniel Woodrell's latest book, a short story collection called The Outlaw Album. Pretty good, with some fine writing, but I prefer his novels.

Also I have been reading Pamela Des Barres' I'm With The Band, which is OK.

And lastly I have begun to read all of Ian Fleming's James Bond novels, something I used to do annually just before Christmas when I was a much younger man. I finished Casino Royale yesterday and I'm well into Live And Let Die today and I am more than a little taken aback with IF's 1950s attitudes. For example "...the sweet tang of rape." Hmm...

Only 'discovered' Miéville because I have a friend who studied Lit and she has never given me bad advice about what books/authors to read. Only read 2 books by him so far (The City & The City being the other one).

and a book by Wodehouse (dutch translation) since I just finished Baudolino by Eco.

I've been in the mood for some light reading and am currently on part
three of The Strain Trilogy, co-authored by Guillermo del Toro and Chuck
Hogan.

Right, I read Moonraker, Diamonds Are Forever, From Russia With Love, Dr No, Goldfinger, For Your Eyes Only, Thunderball, The Spy Who Loved Me, On Her Majesty's Secret Service, You Only Live Twice and Octopussy & The Living Daylights. I finished them on New Year's Eve. Fleming's 50s/60s attitudes remained eye-opening throughout, but the books are (mostly) still very readable. I might give it another twenty years before I read them again, though they may have turned to dust by then - printed between 1961 and 1974 or so.

Mrs J H got me a Kindle for Exmas, so I read A Christmas Carol on Exmas Day - seasonal and free - and have since read John Higgs' Timothy Leary biography I Have America Surrounded and most of Jake Adelstein's Tokyo Vice, which is very interesting indeed.

I read V For Vendetta, too - does that count as reading?

The Boy's school gave away a load of books from its library, and we ended up with something called The Enchanted, a 1968 reprint of a 1951 story by Elizabeth Coatsworth, which once belonged to Kokomo Public Library, Kokomo, Indiana. It's a children's book, but you wouldn't know it from the first 52 pages - it has the slightly unsettling atmosphere and Maine setting that you might find at the start of a Stephen King book. The latest Stephen King book, incidentally, is waiting for me a couple of rooms away.

Mrs J H has just recommended to me John Powell's How Music Works, so I'll read that soon, too.
